Lee stars in nine-wicket win for South Africa Women
Ireland Women bows out of race for the final after losing three straight games
South Africa Women cruised to a comfortable nine-wicket win over Ireland Women in the 5th match of the PCB Qatar Women’s 20-over Tri-Series at West End Park International Cricket Stadium, Doha, on Wednesday (January 22).
Put in to bat, Ireland posted just 101 for the loss of seven wickets before South Africa, led by Lizelle Lee, the opener who was named the Player of the Match for her 53, chased down the target in 14.2 overs. Ireland, after having lost its third consecutive match in the tournament, is out of contention for a spot in the final.
Ireland lost Emma Flanaghan in the second over, with just six on the board. Clare Shillington (25) and Isobel Joyce, the captain, then got together for a 53-run stand for the second wicket. After Shillington’s run out in the first ball of the tenth over, it was Joyce who fought a lone battle as she became only the second batter to get to double figures for Ireland. She fought on almost till the end until Moseline Daniels castled her with nine deliveries remaining in the innings. Joyce departed for a 48-ball 47.
Daniels was easily the best of South Africa’s bowlers. She conceded just seven runs off her four overs, in addition to picking up the important wicket of Joyce.
An opening stand of 83 runs between Lee and Trisha Chetty (27 not out) meant that by the time Lee was caught off Amy Kenealy in the 15th over, Ireland was left with no chance of a fightback. Lee was also the Player of the Match in the previous game, for her fifty, against Ireland on January 20.
Chetty and Mignon du Preez (8 not out), the South Africa captain, completed the formalities to take their team home with nine wickets in hand and 34 balls to spare. Lee took just 52 balls for her 53 and hit five boundaries and a six.
Ireland’s bowlers were expensive. But Joyce proved to be good with the ball as well, giving away just 16 runs off her four overs, to finish as Ireland’s most economical bowler.
South Africa Women are to play another match on Wednesday – an inconsequential clash with Pakistan Women – at the same venue. The two teams will face off in the final at Doha on January 24.
