Pakistan seals tri-series victory
Javeria Khan stars in chase after South Africa was restricted to 68/9 in 20 overs
Pakistan Women cruised to a seven-wicket win over South Africa Women in the final of the PCB Qatar Women’s 20-over Tri-Series at West End Park International Cricket Stadium in Doha on Friday (January 24).
Sent in, South Africa was restricted to a paltry 68 for 9 in 20 overs. Pakistan, powered by some steady batting from Javeria Khan, overhauled the target in 16.1 overs.
Asmavia Iqbal bowled the in-form Lizelle Lee off the first ball of the match. Nida Dar and Sania Khan then struck with two quick wickets and South Africa was pegged on the back foot at 21 for 4 by the ninth over.
Following that, Marizanne Kapp and Sunette Loubser put on 27 runs for the fifth wicket, which was the highest partnership of the innings. Kapp was the only batter to reach double figures, while the rest had no answer to what the Pakistan bowlers threw at them.
Iqbal picked up her second wicket when she sent back Loubser. South Africa managed to score only 20 runs after that with Kapp scoring majority of the runs. Kapp was dismissed for 40 off the last ball of the innings.
Chasing 69, Javeria and Nain Abidi shared a 27-run opening stand before Abidi was stumped off Loubser. Javeria stuck it out though, sharing partnerships with Dar (11) and Bismah Maroof (14*) to take Pakistan close to victory.
Moseline Daniels bowled Javeria after a 46-ball 38, three runs shy of victory before Maroof ended the match with a boundary to hand Pakistan the series victory with 23 balls to spare.
