Bowlers guide Bangladesh Women to 43-run win
Mondal leads the attack with 4 for 35, as Bangladesh, defending a low total, records impressive win in first ODI against Pakistan Women
Bangladesh Women’s bowlers, led by Lata Mondal who took 4 for 35 off eight overs, came up with a spirited effort to successfully defend a low total and script a 43-run win against Pakistan Women in the first One-Day International of the two-match series on Tuesday (March 4).
Mondal accounted for the top four batters as Pakistan, in pursuit of 153, was bundled out for 109 in 44.1 overs. Earlier, Bangladesh was bowled out for 152 in 49.3 overs after being put in at the Sheikh Kamal International Cricket Stadium at Cox’s Bazar.
Pakistan struggled to get any partnership going and at 63 for 8 after just 23.1 overs, was in danger of being bowled out for double figures. A 38-run stand between Asmavia Iqbal, who top-scored with 40 and Sumaiya Siddiqi, however, frustrated Bangladesh’s bowlers for 16.4 overs as Pakistan went past the 100-run mark. However, once Siddiqi fell in the 40th over, trapped in front by Jahanara Alam, it was just a matter of time, as Iqbal too fell soon after, trapped leg before by Salma Khatun, the offspinner.
Siddiqi took 58 balls for her five runs, while Iqbal consumed 86 balls and hit five boundaries en route to her 40.
Mondal received support from the rest of the attack with all of Bangladesh’s bowlers proving economical. Alam returned figures of 3 for 22 off her 10 overs. Khatun finished with 2 for 10 in 8.1 overs and while Rumana Ahmed’s legbreaks fetched her the lone wicket of Nida Dar.
Earlier, Bangladesh recovered from a shaky start to post 152, thanks mainly to three back-to-back partnerships. Finding itself at 33 for 4, Rumana added 31 with Mondal (10) in 60 balls. Following the latter’s departure in the 25th over, Rumana carried on with a 36-run stand with Shaila Sharmin (22) as Bangladesh reached the 100-run mark. Rumana was eventually castled by Qanita Jalil, the right-arm pacer, following which Sharmin added 33 with Nuzhat Tasnia (26), the wicketkeeper, as Bangladesh managed to post what proved to be a match-winning total.
Jalil was the pick of the bowlers for Pakistan, returning figures of 3 for 26 off her quota of 10 overs. Dar took 2 for 19 off 8.3 overs.
The second ODI will be played at the same venue on March 6, before the teams clash in a two-match T20I series.
