Chapman helps Hong Kong upset Zimbabwe
Batsman smashes unbeaten half-century to seal last ball thriller while chasing Zimbabwe’s 153 for 7
Mark Chapman smashed an unbeaten 53 off just 33 balls as Hong Kong began its ICC World Twenty20 2014 campaign on a buoyant note, upsetting Zimbabwe with a four-wicket win in a first warm-up match on Wednesday (March 12).
Put in to bat, Zimbabwe was restricted to 153 for 7 in 20 overs at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chittagong, and Chapman’s heroics sealed victory off the final ball. With the scores level, Chapman smashed the last ball for six as Hong Kong went to 159 for 6 and he completed a half-century.
Chapman came in with Hong Kong 47 for 4 in 8.1 overs, which later became 89 for 6 in the 14th over, but found a good ally in Tanwir Afzal, who remained unbeaten on 37 off 21, with the duo scoring 70 runs in their unbroken stand off just 39 balls.
Earlier, Zimbabwe lost Hamilton Masakadza for 1, when he was caught behind off Haseeb Amjad. But Sikandar Raza and Brendan Taylor, the captain, steadied the innings with a 42-run stand for the second wicket.
Two wickets within four balls dented Zimbabwe’s progress but handy contributions from the middle order -- Vusi Sibanda’s 31 off 22 balls and Elton Chigumbura’s brisk 28-ball 45--ensured it could reach a respectable total. Irfan Ahmed, the right-arm pacer, was the pick among the Hong Kong bowlers returning 3 for 25 in four overs, while Amjad snared 2 for 37.
Zimbabwe’s bowlers came up with a spirited effort in response, reducing Hong Kong to 34 for 3 in 5.4 overs. Jamie Atkinson, the captain, added 20 before being trapped by Natsai Mushangwe. Nizakat Khan, and Chapman then came together, but Zimbabwe made further inroads after a brief stand, dismissing Nizakat and Roy Lamsam in a space of two overs.
However, that was when Chapman and Afzal got together, and from there, the match turned Hong Kong’s way.
Zimbabwe plays Afghanistan in its second warm-up game on March 14, while Hong Kong takes on Netherlands on the same day.
