Malaysia and Jersey register big wins again
Nigeria holds nerve in low-scoring thriller against Guernsey on second day of the ICC World Cricket League Division 5
Malaysia and Jersey recorded successive wins – big ones at that – over Cayman Islands and Tanzania respectively, while Nigeria won a close encounter against Guernsey to register its maiden win on the second day of the ICC World Cricket League Division 5, being played in Kuala Lumpur, on Friday (March 7).
At Bayuemas Oval, Malaysia’s batsmen once again came good to help the team to its second consecutive total in excess of 300, bettering the 318 for 5 against Tanzania, scored on Thursday, to post 333 for 5 after being asked to bat.
Nasir Shafiq, who opened the innings, carried his good form from the previous game as he smashed 16 fours and four sixes on his way to an unbeaten 151 off 149 balls. Shafiq’s form allowed the rest of the batsmen to play around him and Malaysia found useful contributions from many of the other batsmen.
Troy Taylor, who took 3 for 55 in ten overs, was the best bowler for Cayman Islands.
In the second half, Hassan Mohammed’s second consecutive four-wicket haul and some disciplined bowling from the rest ensured that Cayman Islands surrendered without putting up a fight. Hassan’s impressive spell of 4 for 10 from 2.4 overs, coupled with Khizar Hayat, who returned 3 for 15, helped Malaysia bowl Cayman Islands out for 120 to seal a 213-run win.
At Kinrara Academy Oval, Jersey’s batsmen put up a healthy 266 for 4 before Cornelis Bodenstein’s 4 for 31 in seven overs helped bowl Tanzania out for 164 in 41.4 overs, resulting in a 102-run victory.
After losing Peter Gough, the captain, in the second over, Nathaniel Watkins (73) and Ben Stevens (53) led the recovery for Jersey with a 100-run stand. Following Stevens’s departure, Watkins put together with a 52-run stand with Jonty Jenner (38), before Dean Morrison (51 not out off 42 balls) and Andy Dewhurst (35 not out off 24 balls) added 82 runs in 50 balls to push the total along.
Malaysia had Tanzania on the mat at 86 for 5, but Arshan Jasani (28) added 58 with Benson Niyakini in what was the highest partnership of the innings. Niyakini provided fireworks, smashing two boundaries and three sixes en route to a 37-ball 48, but it was all in vain.
Anthony Hawkins-Kay, who opened the bowling with Bodenstein, bowled well in tandem with his partner, returning figures of 3 for 25 off 8.4 overs.
At Royal Selangor Club, Nigeria pulled off a dramatic two-wicket win in the last over of a low-scoring thriller.
Lucas Barker and Isaac Damarell, the openers, got Guernsey off to a slow but steady start, putting together 63 in 19.5 overs. Damarell was the first to depart when he was castled by Endurance Ofem. Ofem struck a second time to remove Barker, having him caught by Saheed Akolade after Barker had scored 45, the highest for the innings. The batsmen who followed got off to starts, but with none of them managing to get a big one, Guernsey ended up with a modest 192 for 9 at the end of 50 overs.
Ofem’s ten overs fetched him 3 for 35. Akolade chipped in with three wickets as well with his eight overs costing 29 runs. Joshua Ogunlola took 2 for 34 in nine overs.
At 62 for 1, Nigeria was cruising in its pursuit of the small target. But, Guernsey’s bowlers made some quick strikes to reduce Nigeria to 81 for 4.
Kunle Adegbola (20) and Dotun Olatunji, who top-scored with 40, then added 56 for the fifth wicket, but following their dismissals, Nigeria slipped to a situation where it needed five runs with just two wickets in hand.
But, Olajide Bejide, who remained unbeaten on 31 off 37 balls, and Ogunlola, held their nerves to seal a two-wicket win with five balls remaining.
Jamie Nussbaumer, the right-arm pacer, was the pick of the Guernsey bowlers as he returned figures of 3 for 26 off ten overs. David Hooper and Max Ellis chipped in with two wickets apiece.
