Suzie Bates, the New Zealand Women captain, led from the front with an aggressive 51-ball 57, her second consecutive half-century, as her team registered a 34-run win against West Indies Women in the fifth and final Twenty20 International on Sunday (March 9). With this win, New Zealand wrapped up the T20I series 4-0, with one match ending in a no-result.
West Indies kept losing wickets at regular intervals could only manage 90 before being bowled out in 19.4 overs. Earlier, after electing to bat at Bay Oval No. 2 in Mount Maunganui, New Zealand posted 124 for 5 in its 20 overs.
Chasing a competitive total, West Indies batters let themselves down yet again. Shanel Daley (16) and Stacy-Ann King (1), the openers, were dismissed in the space of four balls with just 19 runs on the board in 3.1 overs. Kycia Knight (18) and Kyshona Knight (31) tried to steady the innings with a 40-run stand in 8.3 overs. However, once Kycia was dismissed by Frances Mackay in the 12th over, the West Indies innings fell apart. The last seven batters could add just 31 runs.
Sophie Devine returned figures of 3 for 9 off  3.4 overs and was well supported by Mackay and Bates,.
Bates and Hayley Jensen had earlier got the New Zealand innings off to a solid start, adding 47 for the first wicket in 8 overs before Jensen was run out for 19. Sara McGlashan collaborated with Bates and added 54 runs in 7.4 overs for the second wicket. With the score 101 in the 16th over, New Zealand eyed a strong finish. However, the quick dismissals of Bates, Devine (6) and Nicola Jane Browne (1) meant there was no final flourish as Daley finished with two for 17 runs from her four overs.
The two teams will now head to Bangladesh to participate in the ICC Women’s World T20 2014.
