Raj, Naidu lead India Women to win
Bangladesh Women fall short by 16 runs in first of three Twenty20 Internationals
India Women started preparations for the ICC Women’s World Twenty20 2014 on a bright note by winning the first of three T20Is against Bangladesh Women by 16 runs at Sheikh Kamal International Stadium in Cox's Bazar on Sunday (March 9).
India overcame an early setback in the form of Latika Kumari's wicket to post 101 for 1 in 20 overs, a fighting score at best. But, on the day, it was sufficient as Bangladesh was bowled out for 85 in its 20 overs.
Latika, who made a return to the national team after a gap of five years, was dismissed for a duck to leave India at 3 for 1 after 3.3 overs. But captain Mithali Raj took charge and piloted the innings with an unbeaten 55. Raj starred in an unbroken 98-run stand with Poonam Raut, who made a 46-ball 42, to take India past the 100-run mark.
Bangladesh lost Shamina Sultana off the fourth ball of the innings to Shikha Pandey, but appeared to have steadied the innings courtesy a 35-run partnership between Ayasha Rahman and Sanjida Islam. But once the defiance ended courtesy a run-out that sent Islam back, the innings lost steam.
As many as four Bangladesh batters got into double figures, with the highest score being 21 by Rumana Ahmed. But none of the others hand an answer to Sravanthi Naidu's left-arm spin. Naidu returned figures of 4 for 9 off her three overs on debut, while Gouher Sultana and Jhulan Goswami took two wickets apiece to ensure the win.
The second match will also be played at the same venue on Tuesday.
India swept the series 3-0 when the two teams last met in a T20I series, back in April 2013.
