Guruge leads UAE into Super Sixes
Hong Kong also qualifies despite 22-run loss in final group match
Manjula Guruge and Rohan Mustafa picked up seven wickets between them in Queenstown, as United Arab Emirates beat Hong Kong by 22 runs in the 20th match of the ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifier tournament on Thursday (January 23).
Lots of Hong Kong batsmen got starts in their chase of 250, but Mark Chapman (59) and Babar Hayat (46 not out) were the only ones to continue and put up decent scores on the board as Guruge and Mustafa wreaked havoc. Hong Kong had a string of decent partnerships but failed to convert any of them into a match-winning one.
Guruge was the best UAE bowler, returning figures of 4 for 39, while Mustafa bagged 3 for 53 in 9.4 overs.
Earlier, choosing to bat, UAE got off to a good start courtesy an opening stand of 54 between Salman Faris (22) and Amjad Ali, before Irfan Ahmed went past Faris’s defence in the 15th over. Khurram Khan joined Amjad to put together another good partnership of 72 to take UAE to 126 before Amjad fell one short of his half-century in the 27th over to give Hong Kong a breakthrough to pull back UAE’s scoring rate.
Haseeb Amjad bagged 3 for 33 to restrict UAE to 249 all out in 48.1 overs, Aizaz Khan and Irfan pitching in with two wickets each.
Despite of the loss, Hong Kong qualified for the Super Six stage of the tournament with six points from four matches, alongside Scotland and UAE.
