Afghanistan won comfortably against Netherlands in its first warm-up match ahead of the ICC World Twenty20 2014, triumphing by 35 runs via the Duckworth-Lewis method at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chittagong on Wednesday (March 12).

In pursuit of a revised target of 122 in 15 overs, Netherlands managed only 86 before being bowled out in 12.3 overs, as Aftab Alam and Hamza Hotak picked up seven wickets between them. Earlier, Afghanistan had put up 150 for 7 in 20 overs after opting to bat.

Afghanistan lost Mohammad Shahzad off the first ball of the match. After a good stand, Nawroz Mangal and Karim Sadiq were both dismissed within a short space at the same score, leaving the side 47 for 3 in 9.1 overs.  A fourth-wicket stand of 80 runs between Shafiqullah (39) and Mohammad Nabi (40), the captain, steadied the innings before Shafiqullah was caught behind off Mudassar Bukhari. Ahsan Malik was the best bowler for Netherlands with figures of 3 for 28, and kept Afghanistan’s scoring in check.

In the chase, none of the Netherlands batsmen could make significant scores as wickets kept falling at regular intervals.

Alam, included in place of the injured Hamid Hassan, finished with figures of 4 for 25 and Hotak bowled Malik for his third wicket to wrap things up.

Afghanistan will play Zimbabwe while Netherlands will take on Hong Kong in their last warm-up games on Friday (March 14).
