Jersey holds nerve in close encounter
Malaysia cruises to big win against Nigeria, while Tanzania gets the better of Cayman Islands in low-scoring match-up at the ICC World Cricket League Division Five
Dean Morrison scored an unbeaten 63 as Jersey beat Guernsey by one wicket.
Jersey maintained its unbeaten run with a one-wicket win over Guernsey, while Malaysia cruised to a comfortable nine-wicket win against Nigeria, and Tanzania won a close match in a low-scoring encounter against Cayman Islands on Wednesday (March 12), the fifth day of the ICC World Cricket League Division Five in Kuala Lumpur.
Jersey’s win was scripted by Dean Morrison, who hit an unbeaten 63 that proved crucial. Guernsey was bowled out for 217 after it had elected to bat first at the Kinrara Academy Oval, and Morrison ensured Jersey reached 220 for 9 in 49 overs.
Guernsey's top order did well, with Lucas Barker and Isaac Damarell, the openers, adding 55 for the first wicket in 12.4 overs. But once Barker was dismissed, the run-rate fell steadily. Damarell was caught behind for a 53-ball 43 off Cornelis Bodenstein as Guernsey reached 113 for 3 in the 30th over.
Two quick wickets meant Guernsey found itself 143 for 5, and a late surge followed. First Ben Ferbrache (15) and Oliver Newey (56) put on 31 runs in five overs. That was followed by a 22-run stand between William Peatfield (15) and David Hooper (18) which came in quick time, before Guernsey was bowled out.
Anthony Hawkins-Kay, the right-arm pacer, returned figures of 3 for 44 in eight overs, while Bodenstein’s nine overs fetched him figures of 2 for 56.
Jersey suffered an early blow when it lost Nat Watkins, the opener, for 13. Ben Stevens then helped stabilise the innings, sharing important partnerships of 43 with Peter Gough (19) and 54 with Morrison before being stumped off Max Ellis for 55. Luke Le Tissier then ran through the middle order with his off-breaks, picking up four wickets, as Jersey slipped from 180 for 5 to 215 for 8.
Morrison, though, held his nerve and took Jersey over the line. He hit five boundaries during his 85-ball knock. Tissier finished with impressive figures of 4 for 36 off eight overs, while Ellis took 2 for 34 off his quota.
At the Royal Selangor Club, Tanzania’s bowlers, led by Benson Nyakini, the right-arm pacer, who took 4 for 14 in four overs, helped the team defend a low total, to register a 12-run win. Tanzania was bowled out for a paltry 138 in 44.1 overs after electing to bat first, but the bowlers fought back to bundle Cayman Islands out for 126 in 39.1 overs.
At 66 for 7, Cayman Islands was on the mat. Omar Willis (22) and Darren Cato (31) then resisted Tanzania for 14.5 overs, adding 47 for the eighth wicket. However, Nyakini removed the last three batsmen in quick succession to wrap up proceedings.
Hamisi Abdallah supported Nyakini well, taking 3 for 21. Kassim Nassoro chipped in with 2 for 17.
Earlier, Tanzania was 50 for 1 at one stage, before it slipped to 89 for 9, adding only 39 runs while losing eight wickets in 15.5 overs. However, the tail wagged, with Ally Kimote (18 not out) and Nasibu Mapunda (27) adding 49 for the last wicket to carry Tanzania past the 100-run mark. Omar Willis, the legspinner, then trapped Mapunda in front with his first ball of the innings to wrap the innings up.
Ronald Ebanks was the pick of the bowlers for Cayman Islands, as he picked up 4 for 44. Alessandro Morris was impressive with his off-breaks, picking up three wickets in ten overs while conceding only 18 runs.
At the Bayuemas Oval, Nigeria’s decision to bat first backfired as it was bundled out for 113 in just 32.2 overs. Ricky Sharma and Olajide Bejide, who both scored 24, were the top-scorers for their team. With a 26-run stand for the ninth wicket between Josua Ogunlola and Saheed Akolade being the highest partnership, Nigeria’s innings ended in quick time.
Shahrulnizam Yusof, who took 3 for 29 in eight overs and Suharril Fetri, who finished with 3 for 17 in 6.2 overs, starred with the ball for Malaysia. Hassan Mohammed took 2 for 14 in six overs.
Malaysia lost Shafiq Sharif in the very first over, for 4. But, Nasir Shafiq (46 not out) and Ahmed Faiz (60 not out), the captain, ensured there were no further hiccups and took the team past the line comfortably, as Malaysia reached 115 for 1 in 21.1 overs, to cruise to a nine-wicket win.
