Bates leads New Zealand Women to 24-run win
New Zealand posts 133 for 6 before bundling West Indies Women out for 109 in third T20I to take 2-0 lead in five-match series
Suzie Bates, the New Zealand Women captain, led from the front with a three-wicket haul as her team registered a 24-run win against West Indies Women in the third T20I at Queen’s Park, Invercargill, on Wednesday (March 5).
Bates returned figures of 3 for 21 off four overs to help New Zealand bundle West Indies, in pursuit of 134, for 109 and take a 2-0 lead in the five-match series. Earlier, New Zealand posted 133 for 6 in its 20 overs after being asked to bat.
New Zealand’s bowlers struck at frequent intervals and never allowed the West Indies batters to settle down during the chase. With only four batters managing to reach double figures and a 28-run stand between Kyshona Knight (21) and Shemaine Campbelle, who top-scored with 23, being the highest partnership, West Indies fell well short of the target.
Sophie Devine returned figures of 2 for 14 off 3.5 overs. Felicity Leydon-Davis and Morna Nielsen, who opened the bowling, took a wicket apiece.
New Zealand’s innings was highlighted by two important partnerships. With the team on 29 for 2 following the dismissals of Bates and Sam Curtis, the openers, Sara McGlashan (18) added 43 for the third wicket with Devine.
McGlashan was caught off Shakera Selman, following which Devine carried on with a 49-run stand with Katie Perkins. Devine was dismissed in the 18th over for a 37-ball 46, while Perkins’ 25-ball 34 helped boost New Zealand’s total. Selman was West Indies’ most successful bowler with 3 for 23.
Wednesday’s defeat meant West Indies is yet to register its first international win of the tour after New Zealand took the first T20I by 32 runs, before the second match was abandoned.
In the ODI series that preceded it, New Zealand inflicted a 3-0 defeat.
