School Contact Programme and ‘Mini WT20’ big
successes
School visits with event charity partner WASH United organised in 50 schools across the three host cities
With just over a week to go to the start of ICC World Twenty20 Bangladesh 2014, the International Cricket Council (ICC) today announced the details of its successful School Contact Programme and ‘Mini WT20’ tournament, which seek to build awareness about the tournament and promote hygiene and sanitation amongst the youth of the host nation.
The School Contact Programme engaged students from the three host cities Dhaka, Chittagong and Sylhet in a host of cricket-related activities between 5 February and 18 February. The programme sought to create some pre-tournament hype among kids and educate them about the ICC Spirit of Cricket.
Children from 50 schools across Dhaka, Chittagong and Sylhet participated in fun activities such as quiz shows and cricket puzzles, with exclusive ICC merchandise being awarded to the winners.
At the venues, the ICC’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) partner for the ICC World Twenty20 Bangladesh 2014 (ICC WT20), WASH United, impressed upon the schoolchildren the importance of hand-washing, hygiene and sanitation.
After learning from WASH United the various ways and means to prevent disease and combat diarrhoea by practising basic hygiene, the school children in the three cities enthusiastically showed their full support for the Bangladesh men’s and women’s teams, which will both be gunning for their first ICC WT20 title.
The ‘Mini WT20’ tournament that has been organised locally is currently underway, and is seeing 32 schools and over 400 children showing their skills for a cause. Players, coaches, teachers, parents and countless fans have already made the event a tremendous success in the three host cities (pictures attached).
The Dhaka leg of the tournament, which saw matches being played at the Abahoni Maath, concluded on 27 February. The Chittagong zone matches began at the MA Aziz Stadium on 1 March, with the Sylhet Zone encounters getting underway at the District Stadium on 5 March.
Players from the top four schools of each zone will have the honour of participating in the anthem-ceremonies on match-days by carrying ICC flags and country-flags, at the ICC WT20 2014. That, in fact, has been a unique way of motivating players to give it their all and put their best foot forward in the tournament. They have been made to understand that the honour will be earned on merit, and will be an experience that ‘money cannot buy’.
In all three cities, the kids taking part in the ‘Mini WT20’ tournament shared their excitement and said they couldn’t wait to be a part of history. Sajjad of Dhaka’s Willes Little Flower School & College, when animatedly expressing his thoughts, said: “I can’t even think and imagine what it would be like to lead the maestros of the game out onto the field during the ICC WT20.
“It will be a huge, huge honour for me – a real dream come true! I simply cannot wait for the moment to come,” he added.
BCB Media Committee Head Mohammad Jalal Yunus, when explaining how the initiatives seek to convey a larger message before and during the ICC WT20, said: “Cricket is a complete education package. It is extremely important therefore that the future generation is made aware of the spirit of this great game. The School Contact Programme and ‘Mini WT20’ tournament I am sure will play a big role in taking the message of cricket across Bangladesh.
“These are exciting times for our children and the youth. The legacy of the ICC World Twenty20 Bangladesh 2014 will live long in the hearts of these young minds especially through such innovative and thoughtful initiatives,” he added.
