The ICC has confirmed that the Event Technical Committee of the ICC World Twenty20 Bangladesh 2014 has approved Aftab Alam as a replacement player for Hamid Hassan in the Afghanistan squad for the tournament that will be staged in Bangladesh from 16 March to 6 April.

Hamid suffered an injury in the ongoing Asia Cup and, as such, has been ruled out of the ICC World Twenty20 2014.

Aftab, a 21-year-old right-arm medium-fast bowler, has played three One-Day Internationals and as many Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is). He played in the ICC World Twenty20 Qualifier UAE 2012, but missed last year’s event which was also staged in the UAE. Aftab also represented Afghanistan in the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup 2012 in Townsville, Australia, where his side had finished 10th in the 16-team tournament.

The replacement of a player requires the approval of the Event Technical Committee before the replacement player can be officially added to the squad.

The Event Technical Committee of the ICC World Twenty20 Bangladesh 2014 consists of Geoff Allardice (ICC, chairman), Campbell Jamieson (IDI representative),  Mahbubul Anam BCB Director), Khaled Mahmud Sujan (BCB Director and former captain), Russel Arnold – (independent nominee) and Pommie Mbangwa (independent nominee).

Afghanistan will take on host Bangladesh in the tournament opener in Mirpur on 16 March.
